WHAT TO WATCH FOR: 5 storylines for Sunday's race in Bahrain

Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull Racing was the fastest man of the weekend's first Formula 1 practice session on Friday at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir, as the Formula 1 2018 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix got underway in thrilling fashion.

Running fourth in Q1, Verstappen headed back out for a late run and lost control on the exit of Turn 2, sliding sideways through the gravel and hitting the barrier with his front left corner, breaking his suspension. It's just annoying that it happened in that part of qualifying.

The team was assessing the car's condition and starting work on repairs.

Verstappen, though, is hoping that he can at least recover from 15th to fifth.

Thai driver Alexander Albon of DAMS, Briton George Russell of ART Grand Prix and Russian Artem Markelov of Russian Time rounded out the top six. "I studied the data a bit and saw we had a 150hp increase, which is a bit odd". He was 0.3 seconds quicker than Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas and 0.4 ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, whose teammate Sebastian Vettel placed fourth.

"Yeah in general also top speed losses [were a problem]". "But what I would say is that I am happier with my car today than I was last night".

"That session didn't go well for us, but I think the feeling is still not too bad". It was not as much as in the practice but there were still problems on the straight, just not the deployment I wanted, so the team told me to do another lap to try and calibrate it better. "I can see him doing the interviews and he is super excited, so it's good for the team and I'm happy for him". "Somehow from one to the other lap with exactly the same throttle position, the same mode, everything".

But he will now be bumped down the order following an unscheduled gearbox change on his Mercedes.

It all leads up to Sunday's race, which starts at 4.10pm BST and where Hamilton and Vettel will again expect to lead the pack. And then suddenly it spun up the rear tyres quite aggressively, and I spun.

Disclosure are Grammy-nominated big names in dance music and they have collaborated with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Sam Smith, The Weeknd, Lorde and Eliza Doolittle, to name a few major artists. Verstappen was certainly hoping to make the most of the opportunities available to him on race day.
